The Financial Challenges of Transitioning Accreditation and Articulating the Value of GME

The financial challenges associated with meeting ACGME accreditation standards can be numerous and require informed decision making with consideration of both the implicit and explicit costs. Collaborative GME arrangements are increasingly popular and may be required to address the fixed-cost vs. program size challenge. This presentation describes the GME financial impact on the hospital/system and the typical GME cost structure and implications of unification. A confluence of factors is driving many hospitals to attempt to quantify the impact and return on their GME investment. To effectively articulate the value of GME, hospitals are increasingly studying the outcomes data to see the benefits from quality of care and market distinction to physician/hospital relations and advancement of key service lines.
